U2 featured on HBO's 'Entourage' this Sunday...

Don't forget to catch Entourage this weekend. The cast is going to a U2 show and will be featured in the ellipse. Entourage is on HBO on Sunday nights.

IRA lays down its arms | Should be interesting to hear Bono's words tonight...

Globe and Mail -- WASHINGTON -- After more than 3,600 deaths over the past 36 years, the Northern Ireland "Troubles" appear to be drawing to a close after the Irish Republican Army formally announced a historic end to its "armed campaign" and said it would start dumping its huge arms cache.
The IRA announcement, called "a step of unparalleled magnitude" by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, is expected to lead to renewal of stalled political talks on power sharing between Catholics and Protestants in the Northern Ireland assembly. Read more.
Note: As you probably remember U2 recorded Sunday Bloody Sunday in Denver for their Rattle And Hum movie on November 8, 1987. It was the same day as the Enniskillen massacre, where 13 people in Northern Ireland were killed by a bomb detonated by the Irish Republican Army (the IRA). Angered by these events, U2 gave a very emotional performance.
We're betting tonight's Sunday Bloody Sunday may be the best yet of the tour...

Comments from U2tours.com: Bono brings a big male fan on stage for Beautiful Day, who lifts up and carries Bono. Miss Sarajevo is played for the first time since PopMart Sarajevo, 1997. Bono sings Pavarotti's operatic verse and draws loud cheers as he hits each note. Terry Lawless, U2's usually 'hidden' keyboardist, joins the band on stage for Original of the Species. That song and 40 are played for only the 2nd time in Europe this tour.

Staring at the Sunflower in Berlin...

Darek writes:

BERLIN-Another great show!! But ... setlist sucks :-( (same as 2 previous shows) Before Bono said anything to German fans, he said to Polish fans: 'VIVA POLAND'(!!!) That was during NYDay, - he saw our red and white flags! Our group was 20-30 people. We were standing at the top of left target. Later, during 'All I Want Is You', Bono came to us and one of our girls handed a sunflower to him! He took it and he walked on the catwalk with it, then came to us again and gave us the sunflower back. -Darek

ps: This photo (Bono with sunflower) is NOT MINE! Somebody has sent it to me. By the way, girl who gave this sunflower to Bono, is Zbych's girlfriend, her name is Kasia. Darek

Ron from Holland sent in some pictures from last night's show in Amsterdam. You may remember that Ron also sent in a picture a while back of his wife's U2 tattoo.

'Why Not In Poland' Flag Makes Second Appearance on Stage In Paris! (sorry Iceland!)

Click on image above to enlarge.

Our friend Darek in Poland, along with his pals Olive, Venda, and Zbych are reporting that their 'Why Not in Poland?' flag has made another appearance with Bono and the band onstage at Night 2 in Paris. Darek then explained to me that during the Cologne Germany Elevation show in 2001, Darek's friend Zbych got Bono's attention and got him to hold the 'WNIP' flag up on stage (see top pic). Well, luck has been kind to Darek and Zbych and friends once again as Bono again spotted their flag in the crowd and draped it over one of the speaker monitors on stage (see bottom pic). Bono was a bit confused as to the meaning of the flag and Darek described the scene as follows:

PARIS 2nd

A total knock out for us! Again, we woke up early, with a lot of waiting, and then fast we ran straight to the stage, and again we were in the 1st row!!! :))) This time our place was between Bono and Adam. During NYDay we were waving with our flag, as always ;) (the one from 2001 with 'WHY NOT IN POLAND'- the very same flag that Bono took from my friend Zbych in Cologne 2001) Again, Bono spotted us, and he come over to us, and my fiend Zbych threw the flag to the stage. Bono picked it up and he was very confused about the writing, 'Why Not In Poland.' So he came over to us, and asked us, 'What is this all about?' (or something like that) We answered to him that this was the flag from the 2001 Elevation Tour. He smiled and give us a sign that he understood. He took the flag and put on the stage, check pix. Than he put his hands together and THANKED US! (you, know, japanese style)

An ABSOLUTELY AMAZING moment for me and my friend Zbych.

Unforgettable show!
Darek
--------------------------------------------------------------------
PARIS 1st
Wake up early (7.30 AM) and around 9.00 we get to Stade de France, a beautiful stadium. They open the gates at 4.00 PM, we run fast and our group (4 people) has landed in the first row in front of the stage!!!(between Bono and The Edge) Again, NYDay RULEZ!!! Bono saw our flags (we have 2 of them), came up to me and he pointed at his heart, and then point at ME!!! He was looking straight in my eyes! I did the same thing: point at my heart and then point at him. Then I gave him a thumbs up
:)Darek

We'd like to think that Darek and his friends might be one of the biggest reasons for Poland to now be a regular stop on all future U2 tours.

Darek (and friends) going above and beyond the call of Vertiblog duty...

Above shots are from Olympic Stadium in Berlin. (We wonder if the Edge saw this?)

This shot is from the show in Poland.

Darek, a fan from Poland who sent us pictures of his pimped out minivan in preparation for his journey this summer to 12 U2 shows, was kind enough to take the time to take some shots of the Vertiblog logo at the shows in Poland and Berlin. I knew that when I was putting this blog together that there would be some cool things to come out of it, but this is right up there at the top of the list.
Thank you, Darek!
Darek's blog can be seen here: http://u2.homepage.pl/, check it out, he's got some great pictures from shows he's been to.

Londoner Describes His Close Call Today...

from Ickoonite's Live Journal:

I write from work, and am thankful that the events that have unfolded this morning have not had any long-lasting effect on me. I was at Kings Cross, buying my ticket, when the bombs went off at 08:49. My ticket is stamped with that very time. Just as I was about to go into the station entrance, the emergency signs came on.

I am slightly unnerved, because I could have been on the train that was targeted between Kings Cross and Russell Square. At least 21 people on that train have lost their lives. I've been taking the Picadilly Line from Kings Cross at around that time for the past couple of weeks to get to work. I'm thankful I spent that little extra time on my hair this morning. You know, silly little details that one obsesses over after things like this.

I immediately thought that it was just a cock-up, a blip at Kings Cross, and headed for Euston Square. It started to rain, and I thought that it was not without irony that we had been so high-spirited yesterday, after the news about the Olympics. Our brilliant Tube network would ferry the thousands of spectators to the various events in the East End. This "blip", I thought, was just a reminder of how bad the Tube can actually get.

I walked to Oxford Circus and went down to the Victoria Line platforms. There was no indication of when the trains were going to go anywhere, so I came back up, and as I did, a PA announcement declared that no trains were running and that they didn't know when any would be.

Buggger. Typical. [read more here.]

A Beautiful Sight | As planned, fans create Polish flag mosaic during New Year's Day at Poland show...

You may recall that Darek sent us a picture with a fan holding up a sign that said, "Why Not In Poland?" and asked that any U2 fans attending the Katowice show at Slaski Stadium to hold up something white if in the grandstands and something red if in the field. The idea was that during 'New Year's Day', a song with Polish ties*, the stadium would represent a Polish flag when everyone held up their individual colored pieces. As you can see from the image above, it worked exactly as planned.

Nice job, Darek, it looks like it was quite a sight!
*The lyrics to U2's 'New Year's Day' refer to the movement for solidarity lead by Lech Walesa in Poland. After the song was recorded, Poland announced it would abolish martial law, coincidentally, on New Year's Day, 1983.

Vertiblog @ Dave Matthews Band Concert in Saratoga Springs Just Hours After Philly Live8

Well, this isn't totally U2 related, but with all of the Live8 events happening around the world today, we thought you might find it interesting to know that the Vertiblog crew was at the Dave Matthews Band concert tonight at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), in Saratoga Springs, NY. DMB performed last night at SPAC before flying to Philly today for Live8, then flew back to Saratoga tonight to play their second scheduled show. (It rocked, btw...)

So in a way, through a few degrees of separation, we consider this a semi U2 related post since U2 also played at London Live8. We were glad to be a small part of the history being made today. The above cell phone pics aren't great, but it's proof that we were there!

Beautiful Day Lyrics modified for Live8

Bono really put his heart into today's performance of Beautiful Day adding some new lyrics to commemorate today's events:

See the world in green and blue
Hyde Park London stretched out in front of you
Berlin, Rome, Paris France,
Philadelphia this is not romance
Moscow, Toronto, Tokyo
Africa, we're coming home.
And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colors came out...

U2 Perform at Live8

Photo: MJ Kim/Getty Images

The Edge and Bono perform on stage at 'Live 8 London' in Hyde Park on Saturday in London, England. U2 played Vertigo, Beautiful Day, and One.

Imagine... U2 and McCartney to Perform at Live8 While Wearing Sgt. Pepper Costumes...

ariticle from: therockradio.com

Update: U2 and Paul McCartney did not wear Sgt. Pepper outfits during their performance today. U2 did perform One, Vertigo, and Beautiful Day, in addition to Bono performing Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with Sir Paul.

When Paul McCartney and U2 take the stage in Hyde Park on Saturday (July 2, 2005) to open the Live 8 concert in London, they'll do so in Beatles costumes. As reported in Italy's La Repubblica and quoted in England's Sunday Times, the musicians will perform the Beatles song "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" while wearing Sgt. Pepper costumes, as the Beatles did on the cover of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album in 1967. The first line from the song - "It was 20 years ago today" - will also reference the fact that it's been 20 years since the Live Aid concerts in London and Philadelphia, at which U2 and McCartney both performed.
The newspapers also reported that McCartney will close the London show, as expected. He'll lead an all-star version of the Beatles song "The Long And Winding Road," which will symbolize Live 8 organizer Bob Geldof's call for people to march on Scotland for "The Long Walk To Justice." Geldof wants as many people as possible to go to Scotland, where the leaders of the G8 nations will be holding a summit, to demonstrate how important relieving Third World poverty is to ordinary citizens.
McCartney gave the next-to-last performance at the Live Aid concert in Wembley Stadium in London on July 13th, 1985. He did the Beatles' "Let It Be," with guest backing vocals from Geldof, David Bowie, the Who's Pete Townshend, and British star Alison Moyet.
